Simi oke

A bit about you

My full name is Simisola Oke, I’m a doctor by background but I’m currently taking a break to pursue medical research in the aerospace and aviation medicine industry. I’m definitely an extrovert that loves to stay active, netball is one of my favourite sports second only to skiing, and I have an unhealthy obsession with food. Me in a nutshell.

Tell us about the first time you went skiing

The first time I went skiing was 2013 and my love for it started the minute I hit the slopes…. As in literally fell flat on my ass- hit the slopes. I was in my first year of medical school, first experience of having 4 figures in my account #studentloanrich and my housemate convinced me to spend it all on a uni ski trip- I didn’t regret a single penny.

Me being who I am, I refused to get lessons, I was convinced I could teach myself, and I did. I spent the first 2-3 days on my backside, tumbling down these beautiful cascading slopes of Val thorens, but by the end of day 3 I was on blue slopes, managing to get to the bottom fall free. By day 5 I was on the red slopes and by day 7 I was completely in love and I didn’t want to leave.

What do you love most about skiing?

Definitely the ski culture. The sport itself is awesome, and there is something so serene about going down a slope as fast as you can with the scenery of beautiful snowy mountains. I love the adrenaline rush of racing down this steep plane of white, its unimaginable if you’ve never been before. However, what I actually love most, is the culture. Après ski, high energy but carefree.

You chill with your friends, you dance you drink, you meet new people. Then after you’ve had a few and your feeling a bit waived, you pop your skis back on, ski down the mountain, put on a bikini and slide straight into the jacuzzi at the spa in your hotel/apartment...there’s nothing like it.
